Buying a used golf cart can be a really great way to add to your fleet or own your first model. However, before you purchase a used option, a thorough inspection should be completed. Our team at Golf Cars of Louisiana has put together a list of things to watch for when you complete the inspection!

1. What is the Age of the Golf Cart?

Although golf carts can last for decades when they’re properly maintained, it’s still important to know when the model was made. Many times it’s not a matter of performance; older carts can still operate very well! What you really have to think about is how accessible parts will be for the model you’re interested in.

2. Is it Gas or Electric?

Most golf carts are either powered by gasoline or electricity. Both options have their pros and cons, but when you’re shopping for a used model it’s crucial to know how the golf cart operates! Electric and gas golf carts have very different maintenance needs, so you’ll have to keep this in mind when you make a final decision.

If the cart is an electric model, you’ll want to pay close attention to the battery pack and all of the electrical components. Try to find out if the battery has ever been replaced and if there are any warranties still in effect.

If it’s a gas model, you should check the fuel tank for any signs of damage or corrosion.

3. What Are the Current Tires Like?

Another aspect to look at is the current set of tires. Even though they can be replaced, the condition of the tires can give you a good idea of how the golf cart was previously used. Take a look at the tread, watch for any patches, and check the air pressure.

4. How Does It Run?

While you’re completing the inspection, make sure to have a look at the golf cart when it’s off and when it’s running. Ideally you’ll be able to take the cart for a test drive to really get an idea of how well it performs. Listen for odd noises, notice how the brakes work, pay attention to the steering response, and notice how the suspension feels.

During the test drive you can get an idea of any repairs or adjustments that may need to be made. It’s also the perfect time to determine if this model is really right for you!

5. Does It Have the Right Features?

Finally, don’t ignore the features during the inspection! Even though you’ll be focusing on the mechanics and condition of the golf cart, you still want to choose something that has all the amenities you want.
